Team Kentucky Boosts Safety With Automated Speed Enforcement Devices in Work Zones
Abstract:The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is launching the installation of automated speed enforcement devices in active highway work zones to enhance safety for motorists and construction crews. Initial deployments will occur in a U.S. 25 work zone in Fayette County and an I-75 work zone near Corbin, with additional locations planned throughout the fall. Authorized under the Jared Lee Helton Act (House Bill 664), the initiative aims to reduce work-zone crashes by encouraging drivers to slow down and remain alert. Cameras will first be installed in a non-enforcement mode to allow drivers to adjust, with full enforcement beginning in October. Work zones will feature clear signage, citations will only be issued in person by law enforcement officers based on detector data, and fines can be up to $500 when workers are present. State leaders, legislators, and industry representatives emphasize that the program’s goal is to save lives and provide safer working conditions for road crews.
