Traffic Cameras Could Soon Enforce Speed in Nevada Construction Zones

Author/Presenter: Hill, Jessica
Abstract:

Nevada lawmakers are considering Assembly Bill 402 and Senate Bill 415, which propose allowing traffic enforcement cameras in construction zones and high-crash areas to improve road safety. Sponsored by Assemblymember Selena Torres-Fossett, AB 402 would authorize automated systems to issue citations for speeding 10 mph or more over the limit when workers are present. Supporters argue the technology could reduce work zone crashes, which have caused 17 deaths in the past five years. Critics, including the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada and the Nevada Republican Party, raise concerns over privacy, surveillance, and potential government overreach. The debate highlights tensions between safety and civil liberties.
