TxDOT Using Robots to Handle Infrastructure Tasks

Abstract:

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has adopted three types of robots to improve safety and efficiency in infrastructure projects: TyBOT, Spot, and WALL-E. TyBOT, used for rebar tying in Odessa, helps workers avoid physical strain, tying up to 1,100 rebar connections per hour. Spot, a four-legged data-collection robot from Boston Dynamics, operates in Austin to provide real-time, accurate data, navigating complex terrain autonomously or via remote control. WALL-E, a storm-drain inspection robot, also deployed in Austin, protects workers from hazardous environments by exploring potentially dangerous drains. Together, these robots allow TxDOT to complete construction and inspection tasks more safely and effectively.
