Vanguard Technologies on the Move: Delivering Innovations Into the Mainstream of Practice

Author/Presenter: Lord, Byron N.
Abstract:

Through the Vanguard Technologies initiative, the Federal Highway Administration is promoting proven, high-payoff innovations that save time, boost safety and quality, and decrease congestion during highway construction. These innovations include road safety audits, prefabricated bridge elements and systems, precast concrete pavement systems, techniques for making work zones work better, and the safety edge to reduce roadway departure crashes. An insert with this article describes the use of accelerated bridge construction techniques, including prefabricated bridge elements and systems, to build a new superstructure alongside the 4500 South Bridge over Interstate 215 in Salt Lake City while traffic continued to flow. The new superstructure was shifted into place in one weekend.
