Walter Workzone Speaks up About Circle of Protection

Abstract:

Safety is the most important aspect of work zone traffic control. The Circle of Protection is a way to discuss worker safety. The Circle has four rings. Each of the rings is there to protect the road crew. The rings of defense are:
1. Individual road workers – All workers must be aware of the hazards of working around traffic and equipment. Every worker must know what’s going on and remember where they are.
2. The use of proper personal protective equipment – Includes safety vests, hard hats, safety eyewear, safety shoes, and gloves.
3. Channelizing Devices – These devices (cones, drums, etc.) help guide traffic safely through the work zone.
4. The use of advance warning signs to alert drivers – Advance signing and arrow displays communicate with drivers.
