Waymo Recalls Nearly 4,000 Robotaxis to Stop Them Driving Into Highway Construction Zones

Waymo has recalled nearly 4,000 robotaxis after identifying 13 instances in which its vehicles entered highway sections closed for construction in Phoenix and the San Francisco Bay Area. The company suspended freeway operations and is developing a software update to improve its vehicles’ ability to recognize construction zones, closure signs, and other hazards. The recall does not affect surface-street operations. The incidents highlight challenges Waymo faces as it expands autonomous vehicle operations to additional cities and driving environments.
