Work Zone Safety: Safer Highways for Workers and Motorists

Abstract:

To make work zones safer, the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) investigated dozens of suggestions for new safety devices. Taking the ideas that showed the most promise, researchers developed 10 products that would be effective, easy to use, and reasonably priced. Today, eight of those products are commercially available: Flashing Stop/Slow Paddle, Opposing Traffic Lane Divider, Direction Indicator Barricade, Truck-Mounted Attenuator for Chemical Spreaders, Queue Detector, Intrusion Alarm, Portable Rumble Strip, and All-Terrain Sign and Stand. A ninth product-the remotely driven shadow vehicle-is almost market-ready.
