Work Zone Safety With Seamless Traffic Flow: How Moveable Barriers Transform Roadway Construction Zones
Author/Presenter: Sharma, SmitaAbstract:
This article explores how moveable barrier systems enhance safety and mobility in highway work zones. Traditional static lane closures often increase congestion, delays, and crash risks, but moveable barriers provide lane flexibility to balance traffic demand and worker protection. By supporting accelerated bridge construction, minimizing disruptions in high-volume corridors, and reducing project staging challenges, these systems help agencies deliver safer, more efficient work zones. Case studies from Indiana DOT, Alaska DOT, and other projects demonstrate how moveable barriers improve traffic throughput, protect workers, and cut costs while ensuring timely project completion.
