AGC Survey: Highway Work Zone Crash Risks Rising

A yearly survey by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) and HCSS finds that highway work zone crash risks remain a significant concern, with distracted driving, speeding, and inadequate enforcement identified as major contributing factors. Sixty percent of contractors surveyed reported at least one crash involving a moving vehicle in their work zones during the past year, and more than half said crash risks have increased. Drivers and passengers were more likely than construction workers to be injured or killed in reported crashes. Contractors identified increased law enforcement presence, stricter enforcement of existing traffic laws, stronger distracted-driving laws, and automated speed enforcement as measures that could improve work zone safety. The survey highlights the need for greater driver awareness and responsibility, stronger enforcement, improved safety policies, and better crash data collection to reduce work zone crashes and protect both motorists and highway workers.
