Biden-Harris Administration Announces Updated Rule to Improve Safety for Motorists and Roadside Workers Along Highway Construction Work Zones
Abstract:The Biden-Harris Administration has announced updates to the Work Zone Safety and Mobility Rule and the Temporary Traffic Control Devices Rule to enhance safety within work zones. These revisions, the first in 20 years, aim to protect roadway workers and improve traffic flow through construction areas. In response to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s emphasis on infrastructure renewal, the new regulations introduce safety and mobility performance measures for state work zone policies. Key updates mandate protective barriers for workers in high-speed zones and encourage data-driven work zone reviews. The Federal Highway Administration also integrates feedback from various stakeholders to support safer and more efficient roadways, aligning with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Vision Zero and National Roadway Safety Strategy.
