Caltrans Honors Fallen Workers With DTLA Monument, Urges Safety

Abstract:

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) held its annual Workers Memorial event at the District 7 office in downtown Los Angeles to honor employees who lost their lives while on duty in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. The ceremony unveiled the names of 32 fallen workers from District 7, among a total of 194 Caltrans employees killed statewide since 1921. Caltrans Director Tony Tavares highlighted the dedication of crews who work in hazardous conditions to ensure public safety, while emphasizing the continued risks they face. The event also underscored Caltrans’ commitment to the Safe System approach through its 2022 Director’s Policy on Road Safety. Officials reminded motorists of their role in protecting roadside workers by following safety laws, such as slowing down, avoiding distractions, and adhering to the Move Over law.
