CTDOT Stages Speed Cameras in Highway Work Zones

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) has launched its “Know the Zone: Automated Work Zone Speed Control Program” at three highway work zones to reduce speeding and improve safety for roadway workers and motorists. Radar-based cameras detect vehicles traveling 10 mph or more above the posted work zone speed limit and document potential violations. After a testing period that began in October 2025, the program became fully operational on June 1, 2026, initially issuing warning notices before monetary penalties took effect July 6. Pilot data from March through May showed widespread speeding, with cameras detecting more than 8.4 million vehicles, including approximately 1.36 million traveling above the posted work zone speed limit and more than 4,000 traveling over 85 mph. The program requires State Police review of all cases before citations are issued, with driver facial features digitally masked in images.
