Governor Signs Bills That Will Put Safety Cameras in Work Zones

Author/Presenter: Skog, Anna
Abstract:

Michigan has enacted House Bills 4132 and 4133, introducing safety cameras in construction work zones to curb speeding and enhance worker safety. The state joins 23 others already using this technology, which has been shown to reduce speeds and protect road crews. In 2023, Michigan recorded over 8,000 construction zone crashes and 24 related fatalities. The new law authorizes cameras with sensors to detect and document speeding violations, with penalties for drivers exceeding the limit by more than 10 mph in active work zones. Lawmakers emphasize the legislation’s role in safeguarding road workers and ensuring the successful maintenance of Michigan’s infrastructure.
