Highway Contractors Report Growing Dangers in Work Zones as Distracted Driving and Weak Enforcement Persist, Putting Motorists at Greater Risk

A nationwide survey of more than 700 highway construction contractors conducted by the Associated General Contractors of America and HCSS examines current work zone crash risks and safety challenges. The study found that 60 percent of contractors experienced vehicle intrusions into active work zones during the past year, while more than half reported that crash risks had increased. The survey also highlights the greater likelihood of injuries and fatalities among drivers and passengers, concerns about enforcement of work zone traffic laws, project delays caused by crashes, and rising costs for safety equipment. Contractors identified increased law enforcement presence, stricter enforcement, stronger distracted-driving laws, and automated speed enforcement as measures that could improve work zone safety.
