Identifying and Categorizing Safety Risk Factors Causing Vehicle Intrusions in Work Zones

Author/Presenter: Hasnain, Muhammad; Jeelani, Idris; Liu, Rui
Abstract:

Work zones pose significant safety risks to both drivers and workers. Identifying and categorizing those risk factors impacting work zone safety is crucial for implementing effective countermeasures. Many studies have been conducted to investigate the various factors that contribute to safety issues in work zones. However, identifying and analyzing risk factors caused by vehicle intrusions remains limited. This paper aims to synthesize the significant safety risk factors due to vehicle intrusions in work zones, drawing from existing literature studies. Further, the frequency analysis technique is employed to classify the identified risk factors into meaningful groups to aid in the prioritization of targeted safety risk categories. The most significant risk categories identified include driving characteristics, environmental conditions, and work zone characteristics. This study contributes to establishing countermeasures relating to each risk category and implementing advanced technologies such as AI and computer vision for safety enhancement in work zones.
