Illinois Law Revises Driver’s Ed to Help Protect Roadway Workers
Abstract:A new Illinois law, effective immediately, mandates that driver’s education courses include lessons on safely navigating construction zones. Signed by Governor J.B. Pritzker, S.B. 3151 requires school districts to educate students on worker safety awareness, hazards specific to construction zones, and handling emergency situations near railroad crossings. This initiative aims to reduce incidents and fatalities, with data showing 891 work zone deaths in the U.S. in 2022, including 31 in Illinois. Lawmakers emphasize that this measure is critical to protecting both workers and drivers on Illinois roadways.
