Improving Work Zone Safety With Intrusion Alarms

Abstract:

A work zone intrusion alarm (WZIA) system is a set of equipment that is intended to recognize when a work zone intrusion is occurring, and provide audible, visual, or vibratory alarms to rapidly alert drivers and field workers of the intrusion. According to some early adopters of WZIA technologies, WZIA systems have been found to be a cost-effective intervention to improve work zone safety. This case study discusses improving work zone safety with intrusion alarms. In this case study you will learn:

  • What some emerging strategies that transportation agencies use in work zones are.
  • How WZIA technology helps enable work zone safety.
  • How Tennessee, California, and Oregon evaluated existing WZIA technologies and used their results to offer recommendations to other State DOTs.
