INDOT Introduces New Guardian Angel Safety Lights to Enhance Worker Visibility

Author/Presenter: Doninger, Katy
Abstract:

The Indiana Department of Transportation has launched a pilot program introducing guardian angel safety lights to enhance worker visibility in work zones. These wearable devices feature flashing green patterns, which, when combined with standard high-visibility vests, increase worker visibility by 89% according to a Battelle Memorial Institute study. Green was selected for its high visibility and distinctiveness from other work zone lighting. The pilot, initiated in fall 2025 across Northwest Indiana, Southeast Indiana, and Indianapolis, will distribute 375 lights statewide, targeting use during nighttime and adverse weather conditions to improve worker safety.
