INDOT’s ‘Project Greenlight’ Beefs Up Worker Safety
Abstract:The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has launched Project Greenlight, an initiative providing highway workers with wearable Guardian Angel safety lights that flash bright green to improve visibility in work zones. Following a pilot program that began in fall 2025, INDOT plans to distribute approximately 375 lights statewide for use during nighttime operations and periods of reduced visibility. According to a Battelle Memorial Institute study cited by INDOT, the lights can increase worker visibility by 89% when worn with a high-visibility vest. The initiative is part of broader efforts by state DOTs to improve work zone safety through technologies such as automated speed enforcement cameras.
