Michigan Drivers Face Stricter Enforcement as Speed Cameras Roll Out in Work Zones
Abstract:Michigan plans to introduce speed cameras in highway construction zones to strengthen enforcement against speeding and improve worker safety. Authorized through bipartisan legislation signed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, the cameras will operate only when construction workers are present and will be clearly signposted. Drivers caught traveling 10 miles per hour or more above the speed limit will face escalating penalties, beginning with a warning and followed by fines for repeated violations. While some residents support measures that protect road workers, others express concerns about privacy, excessive enforcement, and potential misuse of the technology. Supporters argue the policy is necessary to reduce accidents and fatalities caused by reckless driving, while critics question the cameras’ calibration and implementation. The Michigan Department of Transportation expects to begin installing the cameras soon, with full implementation likely by 2027.
