Mitigating Work-Zone Intrusion Risks
Author/Presenter: Gambatese, John A.; Louis, Joseph; Nnaji, ChukwumaAbstract:
State departments of transportation dedicate considerable time and effort to creating safe driving and working conditions in roadway work zones. However, the prevalence and severity of crashes in work zones remain high compared with non-work-zone areas. Vehicle intrusions are one type of work-zone incident that can occur because of hazardous driving conditions and driver behavior. This article discusses recent research in work zone intrusion technologies (WZITs) and implementation of WZITs. It is based on National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) projects, Research Report 1003: Guide to Alternative Technologies for Preventing and Mitigating Vehicle Intrusions into Highway Work Zones; and Web-Only Document 322: Alternative Technologies for Mitigating the Risk of Injuries and Deaths in Work Zones.
