New Castle County – Electronic Speed Safety Program to Begin in I-95/Churchmans Marsh Work Zone

The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT), in partnership with the Delaware State Police, activated its Electronic Speed Safety Program (ESSP) on northbound I-95 in the Churchmans Marsh work zone in May 2026. Following a 21-day warning period, speeding violations began carrying civil penalties based on the amount by which a vehicle exceeds the posted 55-mph work zone speed limit, with higher penalties for repeat offenses and no driver’s license points. The program builds on DelDOT’s experience using electronic speed enforcement on I-95 since 2024, which has resulted in an average 10% reduction in vehicle speeds and more than 400,000 speeding violations. The Churchmans Marsh bridge rehabilitation project is expected to continue through mid-2027.
