Pennsylvania’s Work Zone Speed Safety Camera Program

Author/Presenter: Cherkauskas, Emily
Abstract:

This article highlights the initiation of the Work Zone Speed Safety Camera program in Pennsylvania, a collaborative effort by PennDOT, the PA Turnpike Commission, and the Pennsylvania State Police. Originally piloted as the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement, the program was made permanent through legislative action. Amendments to the legislation, effective February 15, include a 15-day warning period for first-time violators to adapt to the program. The enforcement aims to deter speeding within work zones, evidenced by significant reductions in speeding incidents and work zone crashes during the pilot phase. The article outlines the operational framework, including the deployment of high-visibility signage for enhanced driver awareness.
