Raise Deflector Shields: Focus on Personal Protection for Construction Workers

Author/Presenter: Zeyher, Allen
Abstract:

The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) supports some safety aspects of the U.S. DOT’s recently released highway reauthorization proposal, but finds it to be largely disappointing. The proposal is known as the Safe, Accountable, Flexible and Efficient Transportation Act of 2003 (SAFETEA). GHSA’s main objection to SAFETEA is that it underfunds behavioral highway safety programs relative to the size of the problem. If the funding level of SAFETEA were adopted, funding for the behavoral programs would be $100 million less than the GHSA would like. Kathryn Swanson, chair of the association said “If Congress approves an appropriate level of funding and gives the states the continued ability to develop data-driven programs, we will continue to save lives and money through effective highway safety programs.” Some of the latest products for protecting highway workers introduced include: SonoBlaster Dual Alert, Miller Edge Fall Protection System, Exofit, RX-100 Bifocal Safety Reading Glasses, RB 4010 anchor, 3M Protective Eyewear Series 1723, E-A-R Push-Ins earplugs, and V-Gard Advance Cap and V-Gard hard hats.
