Abstract:

The Oregon Department of Transportation plans to increase its use of automated flagger assistance devices (AFAD) in road work zones. AFAD are leveled-up traffic signals with an arm that rises and falls to start and stop work zone traffic as needed. They are designed to improve the safety of flaggers by getting them off the roadside.
