Speed Cameras Bring Another Layer of Safety to Eastern Washington Work Zones

The Washington State Department of Transportation and Washington State Patrol are expanding the Work Zone Speed Camera Program to eastern Washington, with cameras deployed at an I-90 paving project near Spokane beginning in June 2026. The program, launched in 2025, uses cameras to detect speeding when work crews are present and has resulted in approximately 77,000 infractions, most of which were first-time warnings. Program changes taking effect July 1, 2026, will impose a $125 fine for first-time infractions, while repeat infractions remain subject to higher penalties. Early data from I-5 near Joint Base Lewis-McChord indicates that speeding decreased substantially during camera enforcement.
