State Dept. of Transportation Expands Work Zone Speed Camera Program

Abstract:

The State Department of Transportation is expanding its Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement (AWZSE) program to additional roadways, including routes near Sangerfield, Herkimer, and Utica. Camera-equipped trucks photograph vehicles speeding through active work zones, with liability notices carrying fines of $50 for a first violation, $75 for a second, and $100 for a third within an 18-month period. DOT officials report that the program has reduced vehicle speeds by 30% in work zones where cameras are deployed.
