Work Zone Safety is Getting the Attention It Deserves
Abstract:Road and bridge construction and rehabilitation is blasting along at record levels, juiced up with a big flow of federal money from TEA-21 legislation. This activity is putting millions of motorists, construction workers, flaggers and inspectors just a wheel away from disaster in construction work zones. When things go wrong, as they can in an instant, there is a monstrous price to pay. In 1999, 868 people were killed in work zones and the carnage continues year in and year out.
