New Work Zone Safety Recommendations Released in Wake of Deadly Crash on Baltimore Beltway

Author/Presenter: Harpster, Lexi
Abstract:

In response to the tragic crash on the Baltimore Beltway that claimed the lives of six construction workers, Maryland officials, led by Governor Wes Moore and Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller, have unveiled a comprehensive set of recommendations to enhance work zone safety. With over 1,100 crashes recorded in Maryland work zones this year alone, the urgency for action is evident. The proposed measures, informed by feedback from 2,200 Marylanders, include aggressive educational campaigns, enhanced enforcement through unmanned cameras, and improved safety protocols at construction sites. Governor Moore emphasizes the collaborative nature of these recommendations, which have been shaped by input from various stakeholders. Immediate steps, such as increased law enforcement presence and a new safety campaign in schools, are already being implemented.
