State Department of Transportation Announces Major Enhancement of Highway Safety With Expansion of Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement Program to Protect Highway Workers

The New York State Department of Transportation announced an expansion of its Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement program to allow speed cameras in work zones on nearly all roadways under NYSDOT jurisdiction, rather than only controlled-access highways. The expansion, authorized under the FY 2027 state budget, is intended to reduce speeding, improve driver behavior, and protect highway workers. Since the program began in April 2023, more than 11,000 deployments have recorded over 46 million vehicles and resulted in more than 700,000 Notices of Liability.
