WSDOT Adds More Highway Work Zone Speed Cameras

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and Washington State Patrol are expanding the Work Zone Speed Camera Program to additional highway work zones in the Spokane area. Launched in April 2025, the program uses cameras to detect speeding when work crews are present, with potential violations reviewed by State Patrol troopers. Beginning July 2026, the program will impose fines of $125 for first-time violations and $248 for subsequent offenses. Early enforcement data indicate that speeding has declined substantially at camera-equipped work zones, including a reduction from more than 60% to as low as 30% of drivers speeding near Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The expansion aims to improve work zone safety amid continued concerns about crashes and fatalities involving roadway workers.
